Technical Standards

Nursing at the technical level involves the provision of direct care for individuals and is characterized by the application of verified knowledge in the skillful performance of nursing functions. All students should possess:

1. Sufficient visual acuity, such as needed in the accurate preparation and administration of medications, and for the observation necessary for patient assessment and nursing care.

2. Sufficient auditory perception to receive verbal communication from patients and members of the health care team and to assess health needs of people through the use of monitoring devices such as cardiac monitors, stethoscopes, IV infusion pumps, Doptones, fire alarms, etc.

3. Sufficient gross and fine motor coordination to respond promptly and to implement the skills, including the manipulation of equipment required in meeting health needs.

4. Sufficient communication skills (speech, writing, reading) to interact with individuals and to communicate their needs promptly and effectively, as may be necessary in the individual’s interest.

5. Sufficient intellectual and emotional functions to plan and implement care for the individuals.

6. Sufficient ability to manage stressful situations, allowing the student to perform at the required levels in all components of the program.

7. The capability to concentrate for long periods of time in selecting correct techniques, equipment and safety measures to assure maximum care and safety of the patient. Therefore, the applicant must be able to exercise independent judgments under both routine and emergency conditions. A person under the habitual influence of alcohol or consciousness-altering drugs could not meet the above criteria.

8. The ability to tolerate and function safely in environmental conditions, such as exposure to a variety of substances (such as latex products) and conditions within the laboratory and clinical environment: temperature fluctuations; electromagnetic radiation; hazardous waste materials, including chemicals, poisonous substances, blood, body tissue or fluids; loud or unpleasant noises; high humidity; inhalants such as dust or other particles. Applicants should have reasonable expectations that they can complete the program of study and meet the educational objectives. Accommodations are unreasonable if they essentially impair or change the curriculum. In addition to other qualifications, the college will, in compliance with the KCTCS regulations and in the manner and to the extent permitted by law, endeavor to provide opportunities to all students in order to promote diversity among the student population in the Practical Nursing Program.

Please Note:
Kentucky Board of Nursing Criminal Convictions Regulation
The Kentucky Administrative Regulation 201 KAR 20:370 authorizes the Kentucky Board of Nursing to deny, limit, revoke, suspend, or take action against an applicant or licensee who is guilty of the offenses or conduct specified in KRS 314:091. Applications for licensure by examination are therefore reviewed for eligibility. Candidates for licensure by examination may be denied an application due to the candidate’s criminal conviction record. Copies of the board’s informational brochure regarding this regulation may be obtained from the nursing office. Upon graduation, the Practical Nursing Student will be required to send a Kentucky Criminal Background Check to the Kentucky Board of Nursing in order to take the NCLEX-PN for final licensure.
