Mission Statement

The mission of the Surgical Technology Program is to provide students with the opportunity to obtain the knowledge and skills to become employed as surgical technologists and become contributing members of the health care team.

Program Goal Statement

The goal of this program is to provide students with the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to gain employment as surgical technologists and become contributing members of the health care team.  This will be accomplished by (1) preparing competent graduates in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective learning domains, and (2) meeting or exceeding the criteria set forth in the current Standards and Guidelines for an Accredited Education Program in Surgical Technology.

Program Goals

  1. The graduate will demonstrate didactic knowledge of all aspects of surgical technology.
  2. The graduate will demonstrate entry-level performance.
  3. The graduate will demonstrate the ability to function in the first scrub solo role (as defined by the Core Curriculum) for core and specialty surgical procedures.
  4. The graduate will model professional behavior by applying the ethical and legal principles of surgical technology practice in the culturally diverse environment of the operating room.
  5. The graduate will demonstrate the ability to formulate appropriate judgments based on professional criteria and standards of the surgical technology profession.
  6. The graduate will demonstrate the ability to work in a team environment to promote quality health care that is coordinated, safe, cost-effective, and patient focused.
  7. The graduate will be able to communicate verbally, nonverbally, and in writing with the patient and other health care team members in an appropriate and effective manner.

Terminal Competencies

Upon completion of this course of study, the graduate Surgical Technologist will:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and practice of basic patient care concepts;
  2. Demonstrate the application of the principles of asepsis in a knowledgeable manner that provides for optimal patient care in the operating room;
  3. Demonstrate basic surgical case preparation skills;
  4. Demonstrate the ability to perform the role of first scrub on all basic surgical cases, and;
  5. Demonstrate responsible behavior as a health care professional.
