Ready To Work
The Ready to Work program exist to assist single parents. Funded with Federal TANF dollars, it is an outgrowth of the “Welfare to Work” initiative, which began in 1988. The program serves as a means of support to single parents with little or no monetary resources; who have decided to attend technical college. Ready to Work /Work and Learn provide career counseling, referrals, advocacy, mentoring, life skills training, and work study opportunities. Ready to Work is designed to equip parents to be successful in college, provide them with valuable work experience, and lead them to self- sufficiency after they graduate from college.
In 2004, the Work and Learn program was created to aid single parents who are seeking to obtain their GED. A major goal of Work and Learn is to transition successful GED recipients into technical college (postsecondary education). The Ready to Work and Work and Learn programs at Bowling Green Technical College have a full time coordinator and case manager. These programs have served 135 parents in the past two years. Last semester Ready to Work students had a 3.5 cumulative grade point average.
