BGTC Hosts SOKY Reads Event
Sep 13, 2012 | 02:00 PM - 03:00 PM | BGTC Library on Main Campus Building C
‘In the Sanctuary of Outcasts’ featured in this fall’s SOKY Reads! Project
SOKY Reads! — a community “one book” reading project — continues in its ninth year with programs focusing on author, editor, magazine publisher, advertising executive, and federal prisoner Neil White and his book In the Sanctuary of Outcasts.
“Neil White’s memoir is a remarkable story of a young man’s loss of everything he deemed important, his imprisonment in a place that would terrify anyone, and his ultimate discovery that redemption can be taught by society’s most dreaded outcasts,” said John Grisham.
As part of the kick off, free copies of In the Sanctuary of Outcasts will be given away on Thursday, August 16 at the Bowling Green Technical College’s Building F Conference Room from 2 to 2:30 pm. Free copies of the book will also be distributed on Thursday, August 9 at 6 p.m. at the Main Branch for the Warren County Public Library.
On Sept. 6, White will lead a writing workshop from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Knicely Conference Center, Room 112. White will cover a variety of topics during his session including Creating Vivid Scenes, The Art vs. Craft of Creative Writing, and What’s Good for Your Life is Bad for Your Writing. No registration is necessary and the workshop is open to the public. At 6 that evening White will be giving a presentation on his story and signing books at the Main Branch of the Warren County Public Library.
Book discussions will also be taking place at 6 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Bob Kirby Branch of the Warren County Public Library; from 3 to 4 p.m. Sept. 12 at Java City in Helm Library on WKU’s main campus; and from 2 to 3 p.m. Aug. 30 and Sept. 13 on the main campus of Bowling Green Technical College in Building C Library. There will be event programs and discussion guides at all library locations as well as online at www.sokybookfest.org.
SOKY Book Fest is a partnership project of WKU Libraries, Warren County Public Library and Barnes & Noble Booksellers. Program guides for SOKY Reads! are available at all partner locations and other venues around Bowling Green. This program is funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and The Kentucky Arts Council.
