- What are the benefits to using my KCTCS student email account?
To facilitate communication among the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, its colleges and students, each student will receive a KCTCS email address beginning in the spring 2003 semester.
Here is how the new email addresses, which were developed in response to requests from many students, will benefit KCTCS students and will provide them with the best academic and communication resources available.
It's universal …
A recent study found that less than 25 percent of KCTCS students have private email accounts. Also, many providers of free-email service are cutting back on storage and services. Through universal student email, all students will be provided with access to a stable email account administered by KCTCS.
The primary purpose behind the new email accounts will be to facilitate students' communications with the System, college, faculty, counselors and other students. KCTCS students across the Commonwealth will have quick and easy access to grade reports, schedules, schedule changes, bills and billing changes via email.
The universal email addresses will provide a consistent, reliable means of communication from the System and colleges. In time, students will receive most official communication from KCTCS via the email addresses.
It's useful…
The Microsoft Exchange email system, administered by the Governor's Office of Technology, is the same system used by KCTCS faculty and staff. It is fully functional, has large storage capacity, and includes access to a system-wide directory of KCTCS faculty, staff and students.
The calendar function will allow coordination between faculty and students regarding office hours, advising sessions and consultations. Students will be able to communicate with peers grouped by program, class, activities, clubs and other categories. The universal email addresses will allow KCTCS and the colleges to expand and enhance the practice of sharing grades and other information with students.
Universal email is part of a package of Web-based services that will benefit KCTCS students in years to come. Other services featured in the Web-based student information system will include online registration and access to academic information.
The KCTCS email account is available to students any time, anywhere via any computer equipped with a Web browser.
We know that some students already have personal email accounts, and they wonder why they need another. Personal email accounts come and go, and many students don't have one at all. The KCTCS accounts will provide a consistent, reliable way to communicate across the System
