Distance Learning

Distance Learning (or Distance Education), is a field of education that focuses on technology, and instructional systems that deliver education to students who are not physically "on site". Technology permits the instructor the means to teach and learn, interactively with the student. Various methods of distance learning include, but are not limited to: Interactive Television (ITV), Online Learning, and Telecourses.

Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) and the Kentucky Virtual Campus (KYVC) are partners in delivering quality, on-line courses, and programs “anytime, anywhere" for students. Online learning offers flexibility and convenience for adult learners. You may access the course from a computer with an Internet connection 24 hours a day, seven days a week from home, work, a college campus, or public library. Except for taking the quizzes and turning in the assignments when they are due, your schedule is up to you!

Bowling Green Technical College uses ‘online learning’, which sometimes may be referred to as eLearning, web classes, online classes, or Blackboard classes.

Online learning refers to courses and programs offered via the Internet. The main difference between online and traditional courses is the delivery format - not the content. Online courses go through the same rigorous curriculum process established by our colleges, and they are taught by qualified instructors. KCTCS offers five different kinds of online classes:

1. Web enhanced course
   A class that regularly meets weekly on campus and uses the web to supplement instruction
2. Complete online course (no more than two proctored exams)
3. Complete online courses offered for local area with no more than two proctored exams required to be done at delivering college campus
4. Hybrid
   A class that meets approximately 50% of meetings/proctored exams onsite and 50% online creating added capacity for onsite classes
5. Blended
   A class that uses a combination of technologies: Blackboard, ITV or KET.

Definitions

Home College: Each distance learning student will have a home college. The home college is defined as the college to which you are admitted and from which you will receive a credential upon successful completion of a program of study. For a listing of KCTCS colleges, click here.

Delivering College: This is defined as the college at which the faculty member teaching the online course is employed. It is not necessarily the same as your home college.
